As Chief Legal Officer of The Motley Fool, Lawrence worked with the members of the Motley Fool Ventures team, and others, on all kinds of deals, from venture and debt financing, to international joint ventures, to technology and content licensing. Lawrence set up regulated and unregulated businesses on four continents. Perhaps most importantly, Lawrence helped The Motley Fool establish some of the internal policies that made it a legendary place to work. Lawrence started his career as a graduate fellow/analyst for counter-terrorism at the CIA and then was an attorney at Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich & Rosati in Palo Alto, and at the National Security Agency. He wrote one of the earliest academic works on the law of cyberwarfare and has been an adjunct professor, teaching classes in privacy, business associations, and securities regulation at the law schools of George Mason University and American University. He is an independent trustee for a mutual fund group and a member of FINRA’s Investor Issues advisory committee. Lawrence graduated from Harvard College and has M.A. and J.D. degrees from Stanford University.
